Neil deGrasse Tyson was born in Manhattan in 1958 and, besides being an astrophysicist, is also a cosmologist, author, and science communicator. His interest in astronomy started at the age of 9 when he visited the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space (part of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City). He recounts the experience as “so strong was the imprint of the night sky that I'm certain I had no choice in the matter, that in fact, the universe called me”. He mentions Dr. Mark Chartrand III (director of the planetarium at the time) as his first intellectual role model and was inspired by his blend of enthusiastic teaching and humor for informing other people about the universe. Neil started studying astronomy obsessively and he was giving lectures on the subject at just 15 years of age. In 1996 he became the director of the Hayden Planetarium and a year later he founded founded the Department of Astrophysics at the museum.
