The Academy of Russian Classical Ballet presents The Nutcracker, a full-length performance of the classic Christmas story, at Florida Theater!
The Academy of Russian Classical Ballet’s mission is to maintain the highest quality classical dance instruction in a disciplined yet supportive setting, to provide cultural opportunities and interchange, and to promote an inclusive environment for students of all ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds. It offers several performance opportunities throughout the year along with exceptional cultural exchange programs between Saint Petersburg, Beijing, and Tokyo. Its students have been accepted in many international and renowned ballet programs such as those at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy (Moscow), Princess Grace Academy of Dance (Monaco), Royal Ballet of Flanders (Belgium), and many others. The Nutcracker is based on French author Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King; a story (written by Prussian author Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann) describing a young girl’s Christmas Eve and her first experience with the wider world and romantic love. The Nutcraker is a fairy tale ballet set to music by Tchaikovsky and it was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. The performance was first commissioned in 1891 by the director of Moscow’s Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky. It premiered a week before Christmas in 1892 but it wasn’t until 1934 that it was performed outside Russia.
